European data reforms ‘mean Britain will never produce another Facebook’

An open letter signed by leading small business representatives, including the Coalition for a Digital Economy (Coadec), the Federation of Small Businesses and the Direct Marketing Association, warns that the European proposals would have the effect of “chilling the evolution of business models”, as well as placing “significant burdens on existing businesses, in the form of unnecessary and burdensome red tape”.

New European regulations will introduce more stringent requirements for the reporting and prevention of data breaches, including the demand that each business should have a nominated employee responsible for customer data security. It will also introduce the “right to be forgotten”, which will mean companies must delete all data they hold about a person on request.
