2 new search engines in a week
There is a certain element of we have had nothing new for some time and then two new search engines come along at the same time. Well alright a week a part. Last Monday saw the launch of WolframAlpha and on Bank Holiday Monday, Microsoft is rumoured to be launching Kumo.
If you have not been on the WolframAlpha site and at least tried it out you are missing a search treat. It is a completely different search engine which is based on systematic knowledge. These are the sorts of searches that you can complete on WolframAlpha:
There is even the opportunity to compare the structure of caffeine with aspirin. It will not threaten Google but on the other had it could fill a niche area that is not catered for on Google. Making all kinds of data available to everyone irrespective of education level or profession.
On the 25 May it is rumoured that Microsoft are going to release it’s new search engine built under the name of Kumo. It will be interesting to see what they have to offer over Google. They are way behind in market share and any device that has moved into everyday language is going to be hard to displace. When was the last time you just did a search without saying “Google it”?
Update
Still no mention of the actual release of Kumo. I will keep you posted but the latest rumour is that it will be tomorrow the 26 May? Time will tell.
Released on 1 June see search category and lead story
