Google Analytics Urchin code

Are you are using the old urchin.js code for your Google Analytics? Do you even know how to check? You are also missing out on functionality and significant improvements that Google have made since 2007.

First you need to check what version you are using. Go to a web page that you know has the code for Google Analytics (GA) and right mouse on the content in white space or the content and view source. If you do not have this option it means that you have right moused on an image. Most GA code is in the footer of a web page so scroll down until you come across some javascript that shows google-analytics.com/ga.js or urchinTracker (urchin.js ). You can also search for these terms to make life a little easier.

This is the functionality you are missing out on:

  • Faster, smaller source file
  • Automatic detection of HTTPS
  • Increased name space safety
  • More convenient set up for tracking e-commerce transactions
  • More customizable code for interactive Ajax-based sites
  • Ability to take advantage of the most up-to-date tracking functionality as it is added to Google Analytics

There has been a lot of talk that the Urchin code will be deprecated however Google announced on Friday the 10th April that this was not the case.
