Netscape no longer supported
In February of 2008 AOL announced that it would no longer support the Netscape browser. This was the first browser available to users of the new world wide web. Further information is available from the Netscape Blog.
In the mid 1990′ Netscape was used by 90% of people online and was for a lot of companies, it was the corporate web standard. Internet Explorer eroded that market share along with the new comer Firefox and Netscape now only has around 0.6% of the market share. Firefox was built by Netscape employees who were made redundant in 2003. AOL has invested in Netscape but it has never been able to claw back market share from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and this has made it unviable. The Netscape blog suggests that users upgrade to either Flock or Firefox. Some hopeful bloggers are suggesting that at some point in the future, Netscape will make a come back.
